Healing Through Giving: Dr. Tim Jones’ Mission to Turn Loss into Hope

Oct 01, 2024

This past weekend, I attended —The Mom and Mitchel Foundation's mental health gala. The foundation was started by Dr. Tim Jones after he experienced the loss of his grandmother, mother, and son who all died from suicide. His journey, while heartbreaking, has now become his powerful force for change, encouraging others to take action in addressing their mental health.

The evening was filled inspiration. Blues artist Jason Ricci performed and shared his personal battle with addiction and mental illness. His vulnerability was a reminder of the struggles that people often face in silence.

Dr. Tim Jones’ gave a speech on the power of giving. He spoke about how giving not only helped him cope with his own depression but also allowed him to find purpose . In a society where individuals are typically only concerned with their own needs, giving connects us to others. The simple act of giving—whether it’s time, energy, or resources—can lead to personal transformation.

Here’s how Dr. Jones described the mental benefits of giving:

  1.  Giving played a role in helping him manage his depression. By helping others, he created an outlet to turn pain into purpose.
  2. When we give freely—without expecting anything in return—we feel more at peace with ourselves and the world around us.
  3. When we invest in others, we contribute to a healthier, more connected world.
  4. Giving creates a bridge between those suffering and those who receive your blessing. It creates a shared experience that brings us closer.
  5.  When we make a positive impact in someone else’s life, it reminds us of our own value and capabilities.
  6. By giving, we see our power, choice, and results of being a good force in the world, no matter the challenges we face.

Regardless of what we’re going through, when we give to others, we also give to ourselves. A simple act of kindness can be enough to start the process of healing within ourselves.
