How to Stay Peaceful When Your Workplace Is a Reality TV Show
Nov 19, 2024Far too often, I hear about work arguments and yelling matches between employees. A hostile work environment is when employees or employers behave in a way that creates intimidation or discomfort for others. These behaviors can be continuous and severe. Behaviors can come from co-workers, supervisors, or the company culture. Examples of hostility at work include: lying, belittling, rude comments, name calling, unfair treatment, humiliation, sabotage, heavy workload, isolation, or exclusion. A hostile work environment can take a toll on anyone, but with the right approach, you can work through it
Here are 5 ways to stay peaceful when your workplace is a reality show
- Hostility is not normal and should not be normalized. You can learn to recognize the signs or patterns of hostility. Notice specific behaviors or patterns that are happening to you and around you.
- Keep a record of incidents, include dates, times, people involved, and what happened.
- Documentation could be useful if you end up having to speak up about it. You can let HR or a trusted manager know what is going on. In severe cases of hostility, consult a legal professional, behavior may violate workplace laws.
- Walk away or set boundaries and do not engage in toxic interactions if possible.
- Learn to manage your emotional reactions. Take a pause before you respond. Practice deep breathing to stay calm in tense situations.
It is your right to feel safe and respected at work and if hostility continues, consider other job opportunities where your skills and well-being will be respected.
