"Not My Problem" – The Art of Minding Your Own Business

Dec 10, 2024

In today’s world, many of us feel obligated to help others solve their own problems at the expense of our own peace and well-being. Whether it’s a personal relationship or a work relationship, that tendency can be draining. While helping someone out occasionally is a very wonderful thing to do, making it a habit can led to unnecessary stress, frustration and anxiety.  Being overly concerned with other people's problem could lead to neglecting your own goals.  It's always a gamble if they will appreciate your efforts anyway.

Workplaces are breeding grounds for stress and overcommitment. A co-worker might constantly vent about their workload, or your boss might give tasks that aren’t part of your responsibilities.

Here’s how reminding yourself “not my problem” can help reduce workplace stress.

  1. Stay clear about your responsibilities and do your job well without being pulled into other people’s tasks.
  2. Taking on tasks or problems that belong to others can lead to overwhelming emotions which reduces your productivity and willingness to be at work.
  3. Stepping back gives others the chance to take ownership of their responsibilities. Which is what they are supposed to be doing anyway.

By focusing on minding your business, you set clear boundaries for yourself and may just find you are less stressed by others.
