Why Investing in Mental Wellness At Work Pays Off

Feb 18, 2025

The majority of us spend a big part of our lives at work. This is where we might find structure, social interaction, and emotional support. In today’s world, taking care of employees’ mental health is not just a nice add on at work, it’s a must if companies want to create employees that feel supported, engaged, creative, and willing to go the extra mile.

Helping employees manage stress and mental challenges does take time, money, and effort, but the cost of not doing so can be much higher. When employees are stressed, they are more likely to take time off work, be less engaged, therefore hurting the company’s bottom line.

When I worked as a therapist, many of my adult patient issues were not just personal but highly related to their work environment. I had my fair share of signing off FMLA mental health requests from employees due to depression, generalized anxiety, and PTSD.

2023 Work in America survey found that employees placed a high value on mental health support in their work setting. With 92% of workers saying it’s important to them that their employer cares about their emotional and psychological well-being. Employers can implement mental health initiatives such as mental health days off, stress management workshops, and accessibility to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).  These preventative strategies limit turnover.  When workplaces prioritize the positive mental state of their employees, they are likely to see higher engagement, attract top talent overtime, and retain current employees.
